Taufers / Tubre
Taufers/Tubre is situated at the border of Swiss Engadine (Canton of Graubünden). Interesting groups of typical old Rhaeto-Romanic houses lend character to the village. Romanic frescoes can be admired in the Church of St. Johann in Taufers. It is worth visiting the nearby Rotund and Reichenberg ruins, owned until 1310 by the Churer bishops, and on the way to Glurns the Calvenbrücke bridge, a site of historical battles.
A visit to the St. Johann Benedictine Monastery dating back to Carolingian times (with early medieval wall frescoes) on the other side of the Italian-Swiss border is highly recommended. This monastery is one of the most important artistic monuments in Europe and has been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List!
