From Taufers i. M., trail no. 10 climbs steeply from Puntweil (almost 1,000m in altitude to the Rifairalm 2,146m). From there, you arrive at trail no. 14 via the Plaschweller Kamm ridge with a view of the Ortler chain down to the Dorferalm and Bergeralm meadows. Cross the Almtal valley (trail 13) through larch woods on an even course to the Lichtenberg gap, then to Stilfs via the Höfeweg trail.
From Taufers i. M., trail no. 10 leads from the Puntweil group of farmsteads on a steep uphill climb (almost 1,000m in altitude to the Rifairalm meadow at 2,146m). First, climb steadily through dense coniferous forest up to the Ochsenboden; then at a height of 1,900m, cross the glorious Wassertal valleys dotted with streams and shrubs. Still on a slight incline, the outstandingly well marked track leads to the lonely Rifairalm meadow, which comes into view immediately above the timber line (no accommodation offered). From here, continue on trail no. 10 across mountain pastures and past boulders to reach the Rifairscharte gap (Furkel pass) at the Plaschweller Kamm ridge at 2,455m. Close to the ridge, there should now be a signpost (at the time of the surveys, this signpost was damaged). For orientation purposes: simply pass the gap and at the turn-off follow the trail to the left (no. 14) on a descent of 500m in altitude directly into the Gutfalltal valley. At the mentioned fork in the road, hikers will enjoy the until now blocked view over the high mountains of the Ortler group, which are crowned by the glittering kingdom of the King Ortler peak with the Trafoier Eiswand and the Tschenglser Hochwand mountains and by the Suldenferner glacier and the Cevedale group. Pass the Dorferalm and Bergeralm meadows and cross the Gutfallbach stream, following the markings for trail no. 13 for a while along the pleasant pastureland path. Head along the gentle basin-shaped valleys and ridges of the idyllic Almtal valley to reach the Schartalpe (1,833m) through larch woodland on a slight descent. From there, the hike first leads steeply down on mountain trail no. 11, and then on a more level course along the farmland trail no. 1 to the village of Stilfs. The mountain slopes above the village lean against the foothills of the Stilfser Alp on the eastern flank of the Fallaschkamm ridge. On reaching the highest settlelments (Faslar), there are several (easy) ways of making the last descent of 200m in altitude down to the little village of Stilfs (1,306m), situated in the high setting of a rather narrow terrace above the Suldenbach riverbed. Natural and cultural heritage
Due to both glaciation and the relative summit heights, the Ortler group is an important mountain group in the Eastern Alps and stretches over a surface area of around 2,800km². The Martelltal, Laaser Tal, Trafoiertal and Suldental valleys provide access into the Ortler group from the Vinschgau area and show distinctively high-alpine traits over wide stretches. The valleys are accompanied by tree-covered slopes, over which only barren high meadows exist. The floor of the aforementioned valleys is often very narrow and only offers the locals limited agricultural possibilities. Another thing these valleys have in common is the abundance of water due to the glaciation of the high summits (which a few decades ago brought the electricity business). The Stilfserjoch national park is situated at the heart of the Alps and comprises the entire Ortler-Cevedale mountain massif. As an alpine national park, it comprises all typical form elements and habitats, from the glacier-covered high mountains standing at around 3,900m to the valley floors lower down at 650m. It borders on the Swiss National Park and is characterised by a wealth of alpine animals and plants. The Stilfserjoch national park is one of the biggest protected zones in the Alps. The local organisations have set up a dense network of marked rambling and hiking paths and also demanding mountain tracks with information panels on the history of the mountain region in the Stilfser Joch national park; meadow, farmland or archaeology trails could be given as examples. These theme trails are often easy but rather narrow hiking paths on slightly downward sloping but mostly wooded terrain. Care should be taken in rainy weather due to a high risk of rock-falls in several sections. High, deeply carved valleys open into the Vinschgau region. Several of these valleys are famous for their beauty and splendour, such as the Münster, Trafoier and Sulden valleys. The route section suggested here for Via Alpina crosses the foothills of the Fallatschkamm ridge towering up between the Münstertal and Trafoi valleys that belongs to the Münstertal Alps. In Stilfs, the houses built next to each other in defiance of the slope give an extraordinary sense of village security. And the inhabitants themselves say that up here, “even the hens should wear crampons“. The village is a popular excursion destination due to the far-raging view. It was established from a former mountain mining community. The smelting furnace below the Stilfser bridge on the trail leading from there to Prad reminds us of this today. (Stefan Illmer, Karin Leichter, AVS)
Other long-distance trails and alternative routes
From the Rifair Scharte pass, it is possible for experienced hikers to walk across the Piz Chavalatsch plateau on trail no. 14a. After the Dorferalm meadow, Via Alpina follows the meadow track for a while. It runs along the outskirts of the wood and at the Furkel Hut in Trafoier valley rejoins Via Alpina. Other sections of the stage follow or cross the Höfeweg and Archaikweg trails.

I can recommend the route via the Obere Stilfser Alm hütte. The hütte is a very nice place to stay with friendly staff, good beds and food. And it does save you the descent to/climb from Stelvio. The route from Obere Stilfser Alm hütte to the Stelvio pass is nice with a nice view on the Ordler mountain south of it.

The stage being too long for me, took the bus to Glurns (very nice city to visit) and another bus to Prato. From there, a path (arcaico) takes me to the village of Stelvio. Stayed at hotel Sonne = Very good for 74 € half board with sauna and jacuzzi.
The Obere Stilfser Alm hütte is a very nice small hut. Staying there means that you don't have to go all the way down to Stilfs, and the next day go up again. Actually I think this should be the stage destination! (coords 46.6002, 10.5090)

Since the route to Taufers RIFAIR ALM and the Col de RIFAIRSCHARTE is fairly well marked. Everything is complicated from the neck because the markup is multiple and share in all directions!
Not finding the route and descent always without Stilfs map .. I continued along a ridge until near Piz Chavalatsch / 2764 m! Then seeking a route down the valley I joined the crest of MUNWARTER before descending into a valley right to stop me at the shelter STILFERSERALM / 2150 m / Tel 00 39 (0) 473 611 744 located above Stilfs.
Friendly reception, accommodation and food quality!
The next morning, a good trail to alpine valley side, I agree to the R70 route to take refuge FURKELHUTTE direction Stilfserjoch / 2 757m.
This route is a good alternative which avoids Return opportunity in the valley with a night in a shelter!
Detailed map welcome ...

The description of the route summary is used up Rifair Alm. Then it is flawed, incomplete and misleading. Do not leave without a map (very) detailed! The estimated travel time is a bit tight.

In this stage description you have marked the Plaschweller Kamm incorrectly. It should be placed at the ridge where the Rifair Schart is. Also in the altigramm there is a peak of over 2500, but when following the track it doesn't go higher that the Rifair Scharte at 2455. The distance between Rifair Alm and Plaschweller Kamm can't be 3,5km. That pretty plain to see when you compare it with the distanse from Puntweil to Rifair Alm. the correct distance is about 1km and takes maybe 30 minutes. The overall stage ascent and descent is also marked wrong cause it's like 1400m up from Puntweil to the pass and about as much down to Stelvio.
Feel free to delete this comment if you have coreected the things I pointed out.
