Leave S-charl in a southeastern direction and follow the valley floor to Plan d'Immez. From here, turn into the Val Plazer. The trail leads over the Cruschetta/S-charljöchl pass to the Swiss-Italian border. First head on a somewhat steeper downward course and then take an easy meadow trail through the solitary Avignatal valley (with its rare flowers and view over the Ortler) out to Taufers i. M.
From S-charl, head uphill alongside the Clemgia creek and follow the little road to reach the Plan d´Immez (1,980m). Here, leave the river and head to the left, climbing for a short while steeply up through the wood to the Plazer Alp (2,091m). From here, continue further uphill across increasingly stony terrain to the Cruschetta pass (2,296m), which the South Tyroleans call the “Scarljöchl”. Beside the cross, a borderstone marks the national border between Switzerland and Italy. This space, with its beautiful view over to the Ortler group is a suitable place to take a rest. Once on the Swiss side, there is also a small mountain lake. Trail no. 1 in the direction of Taufers starts off on a level course paved with stones, which indicates that it used to be an important pass. Soon, the track becomes steeper and opens onto a beautiful view over the Avignatal valley out to the Ortler. Here, it is possible to make a short detour to the nearby Jöchl Hut. This mountain hut was erected with great love for detail by the Taufers mountain rescue group (self-catering with sleeping room for 4). This part of the trail is of particular interest due to the occurrence of rare protected mountain flowers (Turk’s cap lily, devil’s claw). Occasionally, you will also hear the whistling of a marmot. This steep section takes you to the gloriously flat, vast alpine pastureland, covered in places by scree (which falls down from the slopes in bad weather and is washed up by the streams). At the Pravierter Hut, alpine trail no. 5 turns off to the Piz Sesvenna (3,204m). A gentle descent on a wide trail leads to the Mitteralm meadow, where there are unfortunately no catering facilities. Nevertheless, the tables in front of the newly built alpine hut with its well-known cheese dairy give you the chance to take a rest, eat the provisions you have brought with you and enjoy the tranquility. Continuing on, the trail comes to turnoff no. 4 to the Piz Starlex (3,075m) and passes the Mangitzer Alm meadow (no accommodation). The valley becomes narrower on reaching the wood. 4km before the village, the marked trail no. 3 turns right to the Stierberg Hut and the Piz Urtiola (2,910m). Continue along the Valgarolabach stream on a lovely, well signposted trail (with benches and campfire sites) to Taufers i.M.. This picturesque town is situated at the international transport link from Santa Maria in the Münstertal into the Etschtal valley and is thus the first town in Italy on this part of the route. Natural and cultural heritage
The Sesvenna group is a mountain range that will appeal to those who appreciate a tranquil, until recently hardly accessible mountain world. The neighbourhood of the mighty Ortler and Cevedale massif and the Ötztaler glacier was the reason for tourist interest centred more on the adjacent mountain groups with their high summits partially covered by glaciers during the time of the major exploratory hikes in the Eastern Alps, thus leaving the ridge “by the wayside”, in the truest sense of the word. And yet this is a mountain range abounding in beauty. Marmots and chamois find a diverse, undisturbed territory in the Avignatal valley today. The contrast between the geologically different components of the Sesvenna group makes a visit to this Obervinschgau mountain province particularly interesting. Most of the summits are made up of Engadin dolomite, a very brittle rock, as indicated by the enormous mounds of scree at the bottom of the ridges. Rock of metamorphic origin lends a different appearance to several of the peaks. The occurrence of rare, protected flowers in the section between S-charljöchl and the start of the vast alpine pastureland is worth a mention (devil’s claw, Turk’s cap lily, spotted gentian). The trail paved in stone immediately after the pass indicates that the latter was used frequently and was an important crossing in earlier times between two valleys. After descending from the S-charljöchl pass at the start of the vast pastureland, trail no. 5 turns left close to the Pravierter Hut to Piz Sesvenna (3,204m). Alternatively, trail no. 2 towards Taufers on the left could be taken at the Mitteralm. Before Mangitzer meadow, turn right onto trail no. 4 to the Piz Starlex and after 45min turn right before the village onto trail no. 3 to Piz Urtiola.

We also stayed in Haus Abart (even twice) in Taufers. Simple, but welcoming accomodation for 90 Euro for two persons, including breakfast.
Note that the pizzeria Avinga mentioned by Ute is only open on weekends. On other days it is possible to have a good and cheap dinner at hotel Chavalatsch, but you have to be there between 19h and 19:30h, and best call them in advance.

Ich habe in einem Nachbarort von Taufers, Rifair, eine wirklich sehr herzliche Unterkunft im Försterhaus gefunden. Unterkunft mit Frühstück circa 38-40 €, Vorsicht, kein Abendessen, ich habe in Taufers in der Pizzeria Avinga Zwischenstopp gemacht, wurde dafür dort per Auto abgeholt und am nächsten Tag zum wieder zum Touren-Start nach Puntweil gefahren und hatte dadurch keine Extrakilometer zu laufen. Ich kann es super empfehlen.
