Historical and architectural information: Mount S. Michele (275 metres high), in a very important dominant position, was a theatre of bloody battles during the Great War; its summit has been recognized as “monument area”. One can visit the Historical Museum, house to war heirlooms of the time and a rich photographic and cartographic documentation, General Lukachich’s Cave, the Schönburg Tunnel an the Third Army’s Gallery. At the feet of the balcony, from where Austrian-Hungarian soldiers dominated the Isonzo valley and kept the city of Gorizia under control, lies the first line Italian trench where the Austrian-Hungarian division released asphyxiating gas on June 29th 1916 at dawn.
