A very densely wooded stage awaits you. At the start, the descent is still steep, and then becomes more comfortable before the trails rises again steeply in the direction of the Sandlingalm meadow. A detour to the Sandling mountain makes a worthwhile variation when the weather is good. Just before the Lambacher hut, cross the federal border between Styria and Upper Austria.
At the rear side of the Loser Hut, the trail heads in the direction of Blaa Alm. It crosses a meadow path, passes the avalanche protection structures and over alpine terrain, reaching a forest path that must be followed to the right. Walk along this path past the lift station and turning off to the left down into the wood after a short uphill walk. The route heads rather steeply downwards through a spruce wood. It crosses the roadway twice until coming into the clearing in which the Blaa Alm meadow is situated (approx. 1h 40min from the Loser Hut). Pass the farm buildings and continue to the right along the forest road upon arriving in front of the Gasthaus Blaa Alm inn, following the signposting for the Lambacher Hut. At the fork in the road, choose the middle path into the wood. It starts off on a steep incline, but then flattens out again and a beautiful view back over the Loser can be enjoyed. On arriving in the Sandlingalm meadow, follow the track straight uphill past the alpine huts. The Sandling mountain comes into view and the route continues at a leisurely pace at its feet in the shadow of the trees on almost level ground to the Vorder-Sandlingalm meadow. To the left, the track branches off to the Sandling. At the signpost, continue straight on to the lower alpine buildings, between which the trail runs and turns sharply off to the right at the Lambacher Hut. After an approx. 15-minute climb, you will reach the pretty little Lambacher Hut offering a wonderful view over the Großer Sandling and its summit cross blinking in the sun (approx. 2h-2h 30min from the Blaa Alm). The Lambacher Hut only opens on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, serving drinks and snacks and offering overnight accommodation for 30 people. From the refuge, walk slightly downhill through the wood until soon reaching the forest road. A steep track through the wood to Bad Goisern branches off at a tool shed. As the path is not so easy to use in damp conditions owing to its steepness, it is also possible to take the small detour over the "Hütteneck", where additional stop-off possibilities are on offer. You will again come to a forest road, although the trail branches off once more after a few metres into the wood. An only slightly descending, broad hiking trail that is very pleasant to walk along leads to the Kriemoosalm meadow, where a lovely view over the Dachsteingletscher glacier can already be enjoyed (1h 30min to the Kriemoosalm). The trail continues on a roadway over the idyllic Kriemoosalm and then down through woodland to the Rehkogel mountain, where the forest road opens onto the asphalt road. Keep right in the direction of Lasern on reaching the signpost and follow the road downwards. It is possible to avoid the hairpin bends via little short-cuts through the wood. This brings you to the little town of Lasern, which will charm you with its very beautiful, sometimes very old farmhouses. At the fork in the road, continue straight ahead, cross under the main road and you will arrive right in the old centre of Bad Goisern (approx. 1h 15min from the Kriemoosalm). In Bad Goisern, cross under the main road and follow the signs for Lasern. From there, keep following the signs until you reach the Lambacher Hut. At the Blaa Alm meadow, keep to the left and follow a track up through the woods. (Christina Schwann, OeAV)
Natural and cultural heritage
In 1997, the World Heritage Committee in Naples decided to declare the cultural landscape of Hallstatt-Dachstein/Salzkammergut and with it also Bad Goisernzum to be a UNESCO World Cultural and Nature Heritage site owing to the long history of Hallstatt and its many landscape specificities. The attribution of this high distinction was based on four components: “Archeological heritage" stems from the fact that the Hallstatt salt mine is the oldest mining plant still in operation today in the world. The numerous archaeological discoveries from the earlier Ice Age gave an entire epoch (800 to 400 B.C.) the name Hallstatt Period, which has been adopted as an internationally recognised term. And even the Romans recognised the abundance of salt in this area, as they mined the precious mineral on the Vordere Sandlingalm meadow at the foot of the Sandling mountain. "Architectonic heritage" stems from the wealth that this region has generated since the Middle Ages due to the abundant occurrence of salt. Important examples of Gothic, baroque and historicism building still influence the appearance of the Salzkammergut lake district. “Natural heritage” is another component that makes the area stand out. For the Dachstein region displays extraordinary diversity in terms of unique ecological niches of flora and fauna and many imposing cave systems, and the abundant occurrence of salt represents the close connection between nature and cultural heritage. And finally the fourth component, “cultural historic heritage”, which is above all reflected in the specific forms of exploitation influenced by the salt (e.g. forestry) that have made their distinctive mark on the appearance of the landscape.
