From the Zoia hut a dirt track and then a comfortable trail lead to the Alpe Musella pasture. The trail then leads down to Alpe Campascio and on along a flatter section followed by a long climb to the Bochel Del Torno pass. After that the trail leads down to the Palù hut on the shores of the lake of the same name, and down to Chiareggio, a small summer resort in Valmalenco.
From the Zoia hut (2021m) near Campo Moro, follow the signs along a track that leads down to the dam. Cross the dam and continue downwards along the track until it crosses the trail to Alpe Musella (2021m). This high pasture hosts two huts: Musella and Mitta. Follow the trail down into conifer woods, past Campascio (1844m) and along a long flat section of the trail, through pastures. The trail then winds through a wood until it meets a track – the service access for the ski lifts. Follow the track up past Alpe Campolungo (2110m) and on to the pass (2167m), and then down to Alpe Palù (2015m). The trail skirts around Lake Palù (1921m) and then on to the Palù hut (1947m). Continue along the service track for the hut until it crosses a trail. Take the trail downwards, following the signs, past a number of villages: Barchetto (1800m), La Zocca (1845m), Paluetto (1620m), Bracciascia (1670m) and Palolungo (1653m). Here, a track leads to a bridge, near which is the road from Chiesa in Valmalenco valley. Follow the road for about 2km to the village of Chiareggio (1612m). (Regione Lombardia)
Natural and cultural heritage
Vallone Musella: this is a basin of glacial origin, as demonstrated by the moutonnée rocks. The basin is sealed off by an ancient morainic deposit. It is situated at the very top of the high forest vegetation and the surrounding area is untouched and very welcoming. From Musella onwards the valley is wide and steep, between Mount Fòrbici on the left and Sasso Moro on the right; the pastures here are interspersed with rocky areas. Every now and again the steep bank levels out briefly only to become steeper once again. The hillside is thus made up of one brow after another, each time giving the walker the impression that it is the last one, until the exhausting climb seems endless. Some of these are ancient morainic deposits left by the glacier during its withdrawal phase and others are layers of rock, which tourists and climbers on their way to the Marinelli hut have dubbed the "sette sospiri" or “seven sighs”. The Palù Refuge (1965m - Tel. 0342 45 22 01) is located in Alpe Palù, in an interesting setting in terms of the landscape, on the shores of the lake of the same name. The lake is the largest in Valmalenco valley, possibly glacial in origin. It has no effluent and has been turned into a reservoir for the purposes of power production. The water can be transferred to the Lanzada basin. From Alpe di Palù (2007m), through the Campolungo pass (2167m) between Mount Motta (2336m) to the South and Mount Roggione (2361m) to the north, the trail leads to Alpe Campolungo (2110m), the Scérscen hut (1813m) and Campo Frànscia (1557m). North of the lake, a trail leads to Alpe Roggione (2007m) and the Bocchel del Torno pass (2203m), between Mounts Roggione and Sasso Nero (2734m), from where the descent to Campolungo is possible. This area is packed with ski lifts used in the winter and spring months. Every year, on the second Sunday in August, the locals celebrate the feast of "Cristo negli abissi" (Christ in the watery depths) with an underwater expedition. Chiareggio (1612m): a small but famous summer resort in Valmalenco of great natural beauty. From here trails lead up into the Disgrazia chain. In the past, this was the place travellers passed through and necessarily stopped at before continuing to the Muretto pass (2562m). The inn, with its large stables for mules, is still standing. At Chiareggio there is the small church of Sant’Anna, dating from the 18th century. From here there is a fine view of the mountain range with its glaciers, Mount Sissone and the Rosso and Vezzeda Peaks forming a rough circle. The village is in a glacial basin. Three mountain streams pass through here, and their catchment basins mark the southern, western and northern borders of a basin that is of great interest to mountaineers traversing the Disgrazia Chain. The first part of this alluvial plain is Pian del Lupo, an excellent place to camp in the summer. Further on, Alpe Forbesina (1656m) marks the entrance to Val Sissone. The wall of the Disgrazia chain, made up of serpentine rock formations, as are all the mountains in Valmalenco, dominates the entire area. From Chiareggio there is access to the "Vittorio Sella" trail across the Ventina glacier, which is one of the most researched in Europe. The Festa dell'Alpeggio (Feast of the Pastures) takes place in September. (Regione Lombardia)

After the descend from Rif. Mitta a few people camped at the river bank in the valley. Nice spot. The ascend to Rif. Lago Palu is tough - long and boring climb over ski slopes. Take water!
Karsten - 2024-08-29
Having passed Rif. Zoia and stayed at Rif. Lago Palu I passed through Chiareggio (little shop was closed) to continue further on.

You can put your tent near the Rifugio Mitta if you ask. Thé staff is the kindest, the food amazing (and not expensive! We paid 20 euros for pizzoccheri, meat with veggie and a desert, 15 for vegetarian) and the place is beautiful!

At Chiareggio, bar St.Anna has rooms. They don't advertise it, so go in and ask. Conditions are basic, but very cheap €20 pppn, no meals. In the morning, you can order a coffee and a roll, though. The co-owner, Marco is willing to help you with any problem you have.

As others have commented, this stage has much larger climbs and descents than the 50 m / 446 m indicated. There are many alternative trails. The shorter route via Bocchel de Torno includes a very steep rockfall descent (if we repeat, we will go the longer southern route via Alpe Palu) Rifugio Lago Palu is a great place for a break! If you find yourself running late, there is a bus up the valley from San Giuseppe to Chiareggio. The schedule is posted at Rifugio Lago Palu

Night at Bar Santa Anna at the end of the village, on the main road: 20 €.

I pass the night at Albergo Genziana. I have 2 night there because the day after is too rainy. Good price and wonderful food. Chef and his son help me and ask a lot about my project. Really Friendly!
The cheapest accommodation in Chiareggio is the bar 'San Anna' which is next to the to the chapel 'San Anna'. To go out for dinner, I can recommend the pizzeria 'Al Portoni' close to the bar.

Alpe Palù war am Sonntag, 11.07.2010, leider bei schönstem Wetter kommentarlos geschlossen. Viele Wanderer und Radler kamen umsonst. Info trotz vieler Wegweiser erst an der Hütte. Besser keinen Besuch einplanen!

Alpe Palu was on Sunday, 11.07.2010, unfortunately closed without comment in beautiful weather. Many walkers and cyclists were in vain. Info despite many signs only at the lodge. Schedule better not visit!
thanks for your suggestion, at the moment it's not yet possible to show the best chart but we're working to introduce a chart with GPS data.

Tour weit daneben.

at the height of the graph area of Alpe Musella to Alpe Palu is misrepresented. It is missing the Campascio Alm 1800 m and the 2203m col Torno. This is also the altitude specified for the compl. Far off the tour.
