The motto of this stage is: from one national park community into the next. Along the old salt trail with the magnificent mountain backdrop of the Haller Mauern range, one reaches the Rohrauerhaus lodge, crossing the federal border between the province of Styria and Upper Austria. The Dr.-Vogelsangklamm canyon is a special feature here, through which you can go down to Spital am Pyhrn.
In Admont, follow the main road directly past the Stift Admont museum, cross the Enns river and the Ennstal valley main road. Immediately after the bridge, turn to the right and cross the Eßlingbach stream. Follow the course of the stream northwards along a very lovely woodland path. The trail ends exactly opposite the start of the old Hall salt trail at the Eßlingbrücke bridge. Via Alpina follows the salt trail through the wood until reaching the climatic health spa. Every so often, the wood thins out and offers a truly beautiful view over the Hall Plateau and the impressive Haller Mauern mountains. At the meeting point of the salt trail and the road, keep to the right and take a left turn after a short walk. Here, follow the asphalt road northwards (well signposted). Via Alpina leads past the alpine inn to the power station in the Mühlau area. After another short walk, the asphalt road ends at a car park and a small wayside shrine (approx. 1h 50min from Admont). Here, Via Alpina leads to the left following the forest road. After half an hour, turn off onto a track that leads uphill to the Gstatlmaier Alm meadow. Here, cast your eyes over Hall, Admont and the Gesäuse mountains one last time. Continue through the woods, and the path will swing to the right and the 2,197m high Scheiblingstein, uphill to the Pyhrgasgatterl, the border between Styria and Upper Austria. Follow a gently undulating track to the Rohrauerhaus lodge, located in an idyllic setting at the foot of the Großer Pyhrgas mountain (approx. 2h from Mühlau). From the Rohrauerhaus lodge, walk downhill along the forest road towards the Bosruck Hut. The forest road is shortened via a track and you can reach the popular Brosruck Hut after approx. 30-45min. Just afterwards, there is an alternative route through the Dr. Vogelgesangklamm ravine. However, you will be informed at the start that an entry fee must be paid upon leaving the ravine at the lower end. As this is only a EUR 2.- fee, a visit to the ravine is highly recommended, as it really is worth seeing. It must be said, however, that it is the 2nd longest walkable ravine in Austria. At the power station in Spital am Pyhrn, the path leading out of the ravine once again joins the roadway from the Bosruck Hut. Next comes a leisurely walk into the village centre of Spital am Pyhrn, a national park community of the Limestone Alps. From Spital am Pyhrn, follow the signposting to the Dr. Vorgelgesangklamm ravine. From there it is easy to find the trail over the Bosruck Hut and to the Rohrauerhaus lodge. (Christina Schwann, OeAV)
Natural and cultural heritage
The salt theme trail with a little “graduation plant” is situated in the municipality of Hall. Even the name “Hall” indicates the occurrence of salt. Documentary evidence of the salt works dates back as far as 931, and operated until 1543. The graduation plant was used to extract salt more efficiently by letting salinous water run down over enormous walls. The health-giving effects of the fine saltwater spray were soon noticed, and so these graduation plants were later used exclusively for therapeutic purposes. The descent via the Bosruck Hut leads through the Dr. Vogelgesang-Klamm ravine. The ravine got its name from Dr. Moritz Vogelgesang, community doctor of Spital am Pyhrn, who went to great trouble at the turn of the century to make this romantically wild ravine accessible. At 1.5km in length and with over 500 steps, the ravine is the second longest acessible rock ravine in all Austria (open from May to late October). Due to its immediate proximity to the Pyhrn pass, the easiest crossing over the Eastern Alps, the area around Spital am Pyhrn was inhabited from a very early stage. In 1957 drawings were found on several fallen boulders during border renovation work at an altitude of 1,300m above Spital am Pyhrn between the steeply falling rock faces of the Stubwieswipfel and the Schwarzeck, approx. 30min away from the Wurzeralm meadow. The first scientific inspection of the Höll rock fall area took place in 1958. In total, 13 rock drawings were found in the valley basin. One of the most striking rocks is the Durchkriechstein. It is a boulder leaning on a perpendicular rock face, offering a narrow passageway, at the start and end of which figures and drawings have been carved into the rock. Even today, the Höll area is still one of the most significant rock drawing sites in Austria. The stones can be seen in the rock drawing museum in Spital am Pyhrn. Spital am Pyhrn has been in the National park community of the Limestone Alps since 1997. This national park located in the south of Upper Austria comprises the Sensen mountains and the Reichraminger lower mountains over a current area of 20,825ha. The main priorities are recovery, education and research, and all of these areas have been placed under the protection of nature. But it is not their current conditions that must be secured but rather their undisturbed natural development in the long term. (Christina Schwann, OeAV)
