TASTE HIKES IN ALTA VAL TANARO
RESORT:
Priola, Ormea, Garessio (CN) LENGTH: 3 days / 2 nights PROGRAMME: 1st day: arrival at Ristorante Al Castagneto in Priola. Typical welcome lunch at Al Castagneto Hotel. After lunch, guided tour of the ruins of the fortified castle of Priola, dating back to 1300, once belonging to the marquis of Ceva and Priola. Transfer by own means to Ormea and visit of the old town centre, the perimeter of which has the peculiar shape of a heart, overtopped by the overshadowing ruins of the Castle. The town centre of Ormea was built in the Low Middle Ages, and is made up of a main road, Via Roma, from which an intricate labyrinth of alleys branches off; here we find the House of the Lords of Ormea, dating back to the XIV century, and the contiguous New Square. On the Square bearing the same name is the church of San Martino bishop of Tours, housing a fresco of the XIV century depicting the Saint and the Pantocrator Christ, one of the most ancient ones in the area this area. The itinerary also envisages a guided tour of the Ethnographic Museum and the Toy Museum. Transfer to a 3-star Hotel in. Typical dinner and overnight stay. 2nd day: breakfast at the hotel. Transfer by own means to the estate of Casotto at Garessio and guided tour of the Chartreuse, of the Castle and of the Park. The Chartreuse was founded in the XII century and houses the small church of Beato Guglielmo (the Blessed William, n.d.T.), exquisite example of Romanesque architecture. The Chartreuse was built in mid-1700s as a nobles’ residence and was bought by King Charles Albert of Savoy in the first half of the XIX century. This Royal Hunting Lodge was very much loved by Vittorio Emanuele II, and it was here that the very young princess Maria Clotilde took the historical decision to marry Girolamo Napoleon, cousin of the Emperor Napoleon III. Transfer to Garessio and lunch at Isaia’s Tavern, in the hamlet of Valsorda, in the small valley with the same name, in the square on top of the old road crossing the ancient town of Garessio; in the afternoon, together with a guide, we’ll visit the old Sanctuary of the Beatissima Vergine delle Grazie (the Much Blessed Virgin of Graces, n.d.T.), with its large museum of votive offerings and an excellent and ancient fresco of the Madonna dating back to 1400. Transfer by own means to the Hotel in Ormea. Typical dinner and overnight stay. 3rd day: breakfast at the hotel. Transfer by own means to Garessio. Visit to the Medieval Town of Garessio. At the feet of Cornarea’s Mount, after the year 1000, a fortified “Ricetto” (from the Latin receptum, a structure used for guarding goods and cattle, n.d.T.), overshadowed by the Castle. Many buildings inside the perimeter of the ancient Town show traces of their past: the old town gates, the churches of San Giovanni, Santa Maria Extra Moenia, Santa Maria Vergine Assunta. In the Town Hall we’ll visit the new Gallery dedicated to Golia, and the interesting Geospeleology Museum, with its rare archaeological finds. Return to Ormea by own means, typical goodbye lunch at Ristorante Il Borgo in Ormea. Afternoon: end of our services.
