Rif. G. Pelizzo » Montemaggiore

From the top of mount Matajur the trail descends to the bottom of the valley from where, having crossed the Natisone River, it climbs again towards Montefosca. Cutting across the mountainside, a long trail leads to Montemaggiore, the end of the stage.
Detailed route description
From the Pelizzo hut, a rapid descent (trail 725) leads down, past the villages of Mersino Alto and Mersino Basso, levelling out near Stupizza (203m). Once past the Natisone river, the trail continues to Montefosca (707m). A long series of hills and young chestnut woods brings the walker to the Lerada stream (trail 744) which the trail crosses at the Ponte della Capra bridge. Then head on to Prossenico and Case Gasperini. Skirting round a cemetery, cross the Namen stream and the Vittorio Emanuele bridge, then the Rio Bianco stream, to reach Montemaggiore, the end of the stage. The source of the Natisone river is in Campo Bonis. The water gushes out of the rock and begins its impetuous journey, through numerous gorges, to Cividale del Friuli, before losing itself in the gravel of the Friuli plain. From Montemaggiore take a detour by bus to the Torre valley, near Tarcento, where some interesting architectural remains have been meticulously rebuilt after the earthquake.

Natural and cultural heritage
At the characteristic walled town of Tarcento a historical pageant with fireworks is held on the epiphany, in January. In mid-August there is the international folklore festival “Europa dei Cuori”. At Nimis there is an interesting church that dates from 1700 and the Ramandolo wine, a particularly sweet form of Malvasia, is famous. At Faedis there are two castles and some traditional houses. Near Lusevera there are the caves of Villanova. These caves are spectacular because of their length (7 km) and the enormous variety of shapes and formations they contain. The area around is also of particular beauty. Open from April to October (+39-0432-787020). Along the road to Montemaggiore is Campo Bonis, near which the Natisone river has its source. Its route takes it across the border into Slovenia where it is called Natissa, and then back to Friuli via the Stupizza pass, and then it winds through gullies to the city of Cividale del Friuli.
