From the Ellena-Soria hut the trails heads into the valley and then up again, southwards, to the narrow Fenestre pass. There it enters French territory at the heart of the Mercantour national park. It passes close to the Fenestre lake and heads down to the Madone de Fenestre hut, the stage destination facing the Caïres de la Madone.
From the pass, a view over the Cervin mountain and Mount Rose can be enjoyed on clear days. The trail descends directly to the south along a path (old Roman road) marked in green and yellow, which winds its way through the scree, passing close to former military buildings to reach Fenestre lake (2,266m). Then walk along the west bank of the lake and head down to the Fenestre meadowland. Pass close to an isolated, triangular black rock (2,171m) near a spring before arriving at a junction (2,065m). The trail joins the GR® 52, marked in red and white, which leads along a winding track to the Madone de Fenestre hut (Madone de Fenestre sanctuary). From this site, there is a view over the Gélas (3,143m) and the ridge linking Mount Colomb to Mount Ponset. The hamlet is built around the chapel that shelters the statue of the Virgin, which tradition attributes to Saint Luke. (Paul Guglielmi, CDRP 06)
