Leave Pian San Giacomo village on the old pass road heading southward to Mesocco. From here, the mountain trail leads steeply to the Bocchetta de Trescolmen gap. After the pass, take the steep descent into the Calancatal valley. From Valbella, the trail leads gradually downhill via the villages of Rossa and Augio to Selma, the stage destination.
A very long hike lies ahead today. Including breaks, it should take approx. 12 h. The first stretch to Mesocco leads through a region that was intensively exploited even in the dim and distant past of the Romans. From Mesocco, head uphill now through the dense herbaceous perennial woodland in the direction of the Bocchetta de Trescolmen pass at 2,161m. A wild landscape opens out and there is a detour to the Lagh de Trescolmen lake before the Trescolmen Alp. The steep descent through the Largè valley to Valbella requires you to be sure of foot. The almost 12km-long walk along the valley floor to Selma can also be cut short by using public transport (postal car). (ATSE)
Natural and cultural heritage
Val Calanca The settlement of the Val Calanca valley is assumed to have taken place from Saint Bernard and Mesocco in 8 B.C. The name Calanca refers to Ligurian immigrants and means steep or downward sloping, which comes of no surprise when you look at this valley with its steep flanks. Due to the narrowness and isolation, it has been used by many as a place of refuge to escape from wars or epidemics. The valley only became more densely populated in the Middle Ages. The valley was marked by the influence of the governance of the Count of Sax, who maintained close contacts with the Graue Bund (Grey League). It thus joined the canton of Graubünden and not, for example, the canton of Tessino, which from a geographical viewpoint would have been more logical. The lack of space in the valley repeatedly led to waves of emigration. In around 1500, the valley reached its highest population with around 3,000 inhabitants. Many churches and chapels from this time can still be admired today, such as the St. Antonio di Padua chapel in Selma or the Beinhaus building in Cauco, which has in recent years been lovingly restored. Since the 19th century, many agricultural holdings were abandoned in the valley because the industry in Tessino offered better earning possibilities. The alpine dairy farms and “Maiensäss” summer huts suffered visibly. In around 1980, about 800 people were still living in the valley. (Schweizer Wanderwege)

There is another very comfortable way to stay overnight at the Albergo La Cascata in Augio, 30 min. to Rossa. Very nice hotel, good food (70 CHF per person). From there you can also start the next stage well (look at the Swiss map, you can climb up before Cauco again). Bus and cable car like Rudolf? Who likes it ...

The reson why you should go to Mesocco there is a big Supermarket. Coop/ Open at 08:00–12:00 and 14:30–18:00
Clemens - 2014-07-07

Another thing: If the B & B has no place / or the hostess is not there until 19:00 clock drives a bus back to Rossa, because you then can find safe accommodation: There are 3 hostels in this area.

Instead of going to Mesocco descend, I recommend the direct ascent to Sura Ceta. Cross the bridge and go straight. Then remain about 1250 hm, small descent to the gravel road and then comfortably from north to Sura Creta over the suspension bridge. The path of Valbella Selma is never 12 km long. Rather ninth ask the restaurant in Selma next train to the B & B. Highly recommended.

Near the small cable car station SELMA, there is a restaurant ... the night of my arrival was Graziella PEDRETTI furnace!
She lives near the church and has one or two places in B and B. Home very nice but it is advisable to book ... Think about having a few coins to access the cable to Landarenca self-service ... A must!
Daniel - 2011-08-18
Selma: The cable car is self-service, Press the button in the cabin to fire yourself off. When going down you pay downhill as you go out. An ingenious mechanism makes it possible to access the ticket machine inside and outside the gates!
Daniel - 2011-08-18
Rossa: In the Albergio (CHF 60) and the 'Alpina Restaurant' there are rooms.
There's also a B&B in Selma near the church but only for one person (maybe a 2nd one can sleep on the floor). The couple is really nice! Give them my best regards! You should call them a few days or at least one day in advance.

Mesocco some B & B, for example, bar motto tends rude but inexpensive: Tel 0,918,311,115th Very long tour, sharing therefore better! Away from BTTA de Trescolmen something wild and destroyed by landslides in part, to "follow" where the cairn. In some Calancatal Accommodations: Rossa, Augio (Cascade Hotel - really nice and tasty ;-)) and at least 3 beds in a restaurant in Selma at the foot of the cable car station. Good tip: Climb into the pictorial Landarenca, there warehouse with good breakfast and packed lunch www.landarenca.ch, 0918281009, 0,796,654,943th Ropeway between Selma and Landarenca self drive. im Etappenziel Selma gab es keine Unterkunft, deshalb haben wir Hotel Valbella in Rossa angerufen, die Tel.Nr.0918281312 stellte sich als Tel.Nr. von Hotel La Cascada in Augio (1 km weiter) heraus, wo wir blieben.

at the stage finish Selma there was no accommodation, so we've called Rossa Hotel Valbella in which turned out to be Tel.Nr.0918281312 Tel.Nr. Hotel La Cascada in Augio (1 km) out, where we stayed. This was appropriate because of the length of the stage also.
