From the high pasture at Malghera a comfortable, gentle trail, about half way up the right hand slopes of eastern Val Grosina, leads past the pastures at Grasso di Pedruna, Guinzana and Piana and then a dirt track leads to Alpe Carette. An old military mule track provides views over Valtellina as the walker follows it to the lake at Schiazzera, an ideal place for a picnic.
From Malghera (1964m) a well-marked track leads to the bridge over the Malghera stream. After the bridge, a level trail is signposted. Follow the trail to Grasse di Pedruna (1921m). At a crossroads, clearly signposted, follow directions towards Alpe Guinzana (1934m) through conifer woods. At another signposted crossroads, the service track for the pasture is indicated. Follow the track down to where it meets another track. The signs here label the other track as the way to Alpe Piana (1883m). Follow the signs along the track to Carette (1775m) and, at a crossroads, take the other track to the Carette high pasture, as indicated. Follow this track all the way to the pasture. From there a trail is marked. It climbs initially, then, following an old military bridleway, it levels out at above 2100m of altitude. The trail then enters Valtellina, providing the walker with stunning views of the valley, and of the slopes opposite, dotted with May pastures and, towering above them, the peaks of the Alpine foothills, gradually declining towards the plain. Continue past Alpe Salina (2174m) and climb to the freezing Lake Schiazzera (2392m), then head down along the bridleway, past nearby Alpe Schiazzera (2106m) and the Schiazzera hut (2079m). (Regione Lombardia)
Natural and cultural heritage
Western Grosina valley runs along an east-west axis, from Malghera to Fusino, where it joins the main Grosina valley. From here, having walked the length of the lower reservoir, the road begins to climb as the flanks of the mountain become extremely steep, right up to where the huts lie scattered around the pastures at Dosso (1270m). Here the road becomes a mere track, and winds its way round the southern protuberance of Mount Alpisella and into the Western valley, well above the course of the deeply embanked western Roasco. The characteristic shape of the gorge at the lower part of the stream’s course can be clearly observed here. It is deep, carved from the mountain sides that are so close together that they overlap. To the right as you go up is the ridge that links Mount Alpisella to Mount Sasso Campana, separating Western Grosina valley from the Avedo valley. The fields fall away steeply towards the east. The slopes opposite are the sheer, harsh, lower slopes of Mount Dosso Campesello. Only upon reaching the hamlet at Dossa (1350m) does the walker encounter a group of alder trees where the slopes become less steep. Piana valley: a broad, long valley that extends south between the Sassumero Peak (2782m) and the peaks of Campesello (2384m), Cornin (2775m) and Campiano (2768m) that look over the Adda valley above Grossotto and Vervio. At the top of the valley stands the Gandi Rosse peak (2830m). Beyond to the south west lies the Poschiavo valley (Switzerland) and to the south, the northern flank of Mount Masuccio (2816m), above Tirano. (Regione Lombardia)

Too bad there is no possibility of refuge between 2, once again, too long step for me. Folded on the Saoseo refuge passing by Passo di Sacco. Nice step, a little shorter. It's up to us to make our variants.
This track is easy to follow, well sign-posted, and cleared of obstructions. Two steep climbs. Alpe Piano was closed and abandoned, and Alpe Salina is but an abandoned farm shed. None offer accommodation! At the end of the day you can save 2 hours walking time by going straight down to the hut (skipping the lake). Except for the toilets, this hut is OK!

Hi, I wonder IF this stretch is still unmaintained and dangerous. i just want to walk for a few dags from Tirano and want to know if it is best to avoid this stage.

W.Kunz

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen. On 1.Aug. In 2016 we hiked on the Via Alpina R74 from Malgera to Schiazzera. We noticed that the section from Alp Salina to point 2279 is very poorly maintained. The road is totally overgrown with alders and pine trees. Since the terrain is still very steep, it can lead to dangerous situations. Based on other comments, this condition has been so for years !!! For years, we are very happy on the red route, on well maintained roads, on the way. We ask you to review this section and to arrange the necessary arrangements. Best regards W. Kunz

Big security problem for Alpe Salina, after 19 km walk. Between 19.5 and 21 km trail (an old military road with a width of 1m.), Crosses a slope inclined at 40 °. It is almost completely obstructed by bushes on 1.5km (vernes) which have not been removed from 2-3 years. The section is impractical and downright dangerous because you have to cross the vernes blind or pass underneath on a grassy slope. Moreover the paint marks are less visible. There is really urgent to act !!! Step traveled under a fine rain on August 24, 2015. PS: we will write in the same direction to the municipal authority Vervio (province of Sondrio), owner of the sector and of the High Valtellina CAI.
The state of the path to Alp Salima is critical. It looks like that wasn't maintained for years. The bushess grow on the path. Also the grass is covering the edge of the path... very dangerous becouse you can't tell where the edge is.
The same thing on the path in etape 75... last part before the road... in direction Tirano Schiazzera.

I confirm: there is nothing to Alpe Salina. After Grasso di Pedruna the trail gave way to a nasty dirt road that was being opened in late July 2013; many trees cut ... Attention: Panel markup crossroads Carette no longer exists.

Restoration Alpe Salina? random, it was already closed Saturday, 8/27/11.
Variant at the end of this long stage, since the cervix which dominates the cabin Schiazzera you can save 1 hour and a half down directly to the pasture by a path very convenient. But you will not see the beautiful lake.
