Leave the Schesaplana Hut and head east following the high-altitude trail to Golrosa. From here, continue as before, following the high-altitude trail past the Schweizertor (Swiss Gate) pass to reach the stage destination at the pass, the Carschina Hut.
From the hospitable Schesaplana Hut, the trail follows the signposts for the Prättigauer ridge trail horizontally to the east. On the way, you will come across a signpost that marks the climb to the Gamsluggen and the Totalp Hut as an alpine route. 400m before Golrosa, an important hiking junction, keep to the left to reach the Cavelljoch pass at 2,239m. Below the Krichlispitzen peaks, you will arrive via beautiful alpine meadows at the Pardutzbödali plateau. From here, six different hiking routes head off in all possible directions. You can quench your thirst at the various springs before continuing the climb below the Schweizertor gateway in the direction of the towering rock formation of the Drusenfluh peak. All of the passes between the individual promontories have for a long time been used to cross between Austria and Switzerland. The old contacts are still well maintained today. It therefore comes of no surprise that the surnames of the locals on the south and north side of the Rätikon are often the same. A long day’s hike takes you to the very beautiful setting of the Carschina Hut of the SAC Rätia section standing at 2,236m. This hut is a typical Eschenmoser hut, from the six or eight-cornered architecture of its foundation walls to the tables and beds. (Bündner Wanderwege BAW)
Natural and cultural heritage
Prättigau In comparison to the other valley communities in the canton of Graubünden, only very little can be said of Prättigau’s historical development. This can be explained in part by the fact that in the Roman era, the transport routes were above all organised in a north-south direction and there were very few settlements in the side valleys. Nevertheless, we do know that Prättigau was already populated in prehistoric times. This is proven by discoveries from the Iron Age and the Bronze Age, most of which were made in Schiers. On the investigation of a church in Schiers, objects were found that lead us to conclude that people were already living in the valley in the early Middle Ages. During the feudal era, various governing powers became detached from each other. The Austrian Habsburg House developed an ever stronger desire for annexation, which is why the Zehngerichtebund (Ten Courts Federation) was established in order to secure the old freedoms and rights. However, in the middle of the 15th century, the Habsburgs finally managed to gain greater influence over the valley community by buying seigniorial rights. But the population refused to obey, thus leading to armed conflicts with Austria. Their campaigns for conquest brought great suffering to the Prättigau region, and numerous villages were burned to the ground. After the so-called “Bündner Wirren” local revolution, France intervened and in 1649 freedom from Austria was purchased, requiring major financial sacrifices on the part of the local communities. After around 150 years of peaceful existence together, the valley was on the front line of the troops of Napoleon and Austria-Russia, which once again led to new government forms. In 1803, the valley then joined with the “Drei Bünden” (three confederacies) to form Graubünden and the Swiss Confederation. (Schweizer Wanderwege)
