Leave the Pfälzer Hut and head southward, soon crossing the national border into Austria. The mountain trail first crosses the scree slopes of the Barthümel, before leading up to the Gross Furgga gap. After crossing the border into Switzerland, continue below the rock faces of the Rätikon to the Schesaplana Hut, the stage destination.
From the Pfälzer Hut, situated at the Bettlerjoch pass at 2,108m above sea level, the mountain trail leads over alpine meadows, boulder-strewn slopes and between scattered rock towards the Barthümeljoch pass at 2,315m. At approx. 100m below the pass, cross over to the Hochjoch pass, also called the “Gross Furgga” at 2,359m. Even in summer, you will come across snowfields here, which must be crossed with care particularly in the morning due to danger of slipping! At border stone no. 2 between Austria and Switzerland, cross over to the southern side of the Hornspitz and follow the gently descending path towards until arriving south below the “Chlei Furgga” at 2,200m. From here, choose the southward descent to reach the Schesaplana Hut below the rocky face of the Alpstein at 1,908m. The mighty walls of the Schesaplana tower up above you. An alpine route leads from the hut along this precipice to the Schesaplana summit at 2,964m. (Bündner Wanderwege BAW).
Natural and cultural heritage
Rätikon The limestone band up to 600 metres in height and over 3 kilometres in length along the provincial border from the Rheintal valley into the upper Prättigau region can be distinguished even from far off. The precipitous limestone wall mainly consists in light-coloured malm. The Schesaplan, Kirchlisspitzen, Drusenfluh and Schijenflue are unmistakable. The limestone wall lies on the tertiary Prättigauer Lysch and Bündner Schiefer rock formations, from which a broad belt of grassy foothills such as the Vilan, Saassauna and Chrüz have developed, over which stretch woodland and alpine pastures. Deep valley furrows, branching out in an upward direction, divide the summits from each other and open out at regular intervals with a narrow ravine into the main valley. (Schweizer Wanderwege)
