After the last utterly demanding stage, you can look forward today to a leisurely hike, which is mostly downhill. You will take some impressive scenic memories away with you from the heart of the Wetterstein mountain range.
From the Meiler Hut, the route immediately leads quite steeply downward through a scree passage to the green meadows of the Frauenalp. Afterwards, follow a few sharp bends over a ridge and down to the Schachenhaus lodge. This is where the hunting castle of Ludwig II. is situated, with its "Moorish Room" and chess pavilion, from where a splendid view into the Reintal valley can be enjoyed. In addition to this, a visit can also be paid to the botanical alpine garden, which reflects the flora of the Wetterstein mountains (approx. 1h 20min). After refreshments at the Schachenhaus lodge, continue downwards. The track is well built but rather steep in places, although it is secured here with steps and protective barriers. At the mouth of the Oberreintal valley, you will come across a fork in the road. Keep to the right and walk down through the valley in mixed mountain woodland to the Reintal valley (approx. 2h from the Schachenhaus lodge). Here, do not take the path to the right over the bridge (which would lead to Garmisch-Partenkirchen), but keep to the very left, following the Partnach stream for a short while and crossing the little bridge at the Bock Hut. Immediately after the bridge, keep to the left again and follow the course of the stream towards the West. Walk along the beautiful Reintalweg trail now – mostly through mixed mountain woodland – on a slight climb past the little mountain lake called the "Vordere Blaue Gumpe". Below the gigantic northern face of the Hochwanner, the trail leads slightly uphill to the Reintalanger Hut, in the course of which you should take a drink of water at the "Gsundbründl" spring, in order to keep feeling fit and healthy (approx. 1h 30min from the Bock Hut). Cross the stream at the Bock Hut and keep to the left before turning right into the Oberreintal valley. (Christina Schwann, OeAV)
Natural and cultural heritage
This stage offers several highlights, but special mention must be made of the Schachenhaus hut and the botanic alpine garden of the University of Munich. In 1871, King Ludwig II had a hunting castle built in Swiss chalet style in the solitude of the mountains and – like all of his constructions – in a wonderful panoramic setting surrounded by the mighty summits of the Wetterstein. The rooms on the ground floor were used for daily life and, for a king, they are rather simply furnished. On the first floor, however, there is a magnificent room of unusual style: here in the middle of the mountains, King Ludwig had a room decorated as a model of Moorish culture. People say that he could feel and behave like a king here, which was not always the case in real life. Just beside the exotic hunting castle, the University of Munich established a botanical alpine garden with over 1,000 different mountain plant species from all over the world. The garden is tended from early July until mid-September and is open for visits every day of the week. (Christina Schwann, OeAV)

Long and difficult way down to the bottom of the valley. One that breaks the legs!
Reintal is awesomely beautiful.

Vendredi 22 juin

Friday, June 22 R45 step is not very long. We will take the opportunity to go to Knorrhütte where there are still some free places to free us from the Coburgerhütte where there is no more place tomorrow Saturday. Descent on Schachenhaus (hunting lodge of Louis II of Bavaria, visitable) without difficulty. By cons the suite is more delicate, slippery path, sometimes landscaped, to the low point (Bockhütte). Another 700m to climb to reach the Knorrhütte, starting point for climbing the Zugspitze, so also very busy.

Great descent, beautiful but steep from the Meiler refuge to BockHutte. Beautiful location of the Reintalanger refuge, but the atmosphere is "grand tourisme", with alarm clock without any discretion at 5:00. At 5:30 we think to be in a train station, at 6:00 we are entitled to the guitar ... so not really a good memory of the late night ...
In the valley near Reintalanger Hütte is camping (officially) not allowed, too bad, because the area would be perfect. The hut has a sweet terrace around the river. Despite the crowds, a good atmosphere.

La descente à partir du pavillon de Ludwig II est vraiment très raide et peu agréable. A noter que le lac Vordere Blau Gumpe n'existe plus depuis trois ans.

The descent from the house of Ludwig II is very stiff and not very pleasant. Note that the lake Vorderen Blau Gumpe not existed for three years.

20/6/11 Steep downhill from Meilerhutte, then a beautiful valley up to the crowded Reintalanger Hut. We continued ahead to Knorrhutte to be in a better location to climb the Zugspitze tomorrow.

I'm told there's almost never a day when Reintalanger Huette isn't packed with people. This was also true when I was there in July 2011.
