From the Nevesjoch pass (2,405m), trail no. 1 takes a wide curve at an altitude of around 2,500m to the Edelraut Hut on the opposite side of the valley. The 8km long ""Neveser Höhenweg“ trail is secured in several places (stream crossings) or paved in stone. From the hut at the Eisbruggjoch pass, climb over 1,000m in altitude on the ""Pfunderer Höhenweg“ trail down into the valley to Dun (1,468m).
Easier alternative route (difficulty )
From the Nevesjoch pass along trail 24 on a descent of 550m in altitude to the Neves reservoir, then a climb of 700m in altitude to the Edelraut Hut on the opposite side of the valley (marked as no. 26).
From the refuge, climb down several metres to the Nevesjoch pass (2,405m). From there, trail no. 1 leads along a wide curve above the Ursprungtal valley to the Edelraut Hut on the opposite side of the valley. This does not involve a descent, but rather a walk at a constant altitude of around 2,500m along the stoney slopes hemming in the valley. The Möseler and Weißzint glaciers begin not far from the trail. The 8km-long Neveser ridge trail is secured in several places (stream crossings) or paved with stone slabs. Markings in this alpine terrain are rather seldom and sometimes cairns are used for orientation purposes. It is therefore advisable before setting out to check for good visibility. After the Wasserböden area, the terrain becomes somewhat more pleasant and the trail arrives at the Edelraut Hut (2,545m) at the end of the Pfeifholdertal valley. The stage planning provides for a descent from the hut at the Eisbruggjoch pass over 1,000m in altitude into the Pfunderer valley to Dun (1,468m). And Via Alpina again runs for a while along a ridge trail: this time it is the Pfunderer ridge trail, marked with a red and white circle and leading through the original Eisbruggtal valley. One of the first attractions along the trail is the relatively large Eissbruggsee lake at 2,350m. Head further downhill over a sloping scarp to the lonely Eisbruggalm meadow. It is remarkable that this mountain meadowland carpeted in alpine flowers can only be accessed on this very narrow track. Until approx. 3km before Dun, the shepherd’s path used is part of the ridge trail. Leave it behind, staying to the right at the end of the Eisbruggtal valley at an altitude of 2,050m (at the only narrow point of the otherwise spacious valley floor) and following trail no. 13 downhill to the hamlet. This last trail section is (at least at the time of the first Via Alpina control hike) more of a cattle trail than a hiking trail, with no signposting and scarcely any markings. However, a topographical map and a trained eye help the hiker to seek out a safe route through the terrain. In Dun, the Heuschupfe hostel offers original accommodation. (Sleeping places must be reserved in advance!) (Stefan Illmer, Karin Leichter, AVS)
Natural and cultural heritage
The Zillertal Alps got their name from the longest and largest valley, which reaches far into the inner mountains and offers quick access to the countryside attractions of this vast mountain area. The Zillertal Alps are influenced by mighty mountain ridges that on the one side run from west to east and on the other sweep away northward from this mighty alpine ridge, which at the same time forms the main alpine ridge. In the south, the Zillertal alps reach as far as the Pustertal valley. Narrow valleys are squeezed between these mighty mountain ridges of primitive rock, often referred to as "Gründe" in the north. Several of these valleys were used to create energy by collecting the melted water flowing down from the glaciers in enormous detention ponds. The Nevesstausee reservoir (1,856m) in Lappach also lies at the foot of the Zillertal Alps and today is even an excursion destination for guests who during their visit wish to experience this still strange looking intrusion upon the sensitive high-alpine world. Unusual landscapes can be viewed by visitors in the southern foothills of the Zillertal Alps and in the Pfunderer mountains. Here, it is mainly the huge flanks often covered in grass even in the peak regions that influence the appearance of this mountain landscape, with far-reaching meadowland and high cirques in which nestle numerous mountain lakes that only shine in the sun during the short summer months.
(Stefan Illmer, Karin Leichter, AVS)
Other long-distance trails and alternative routes
The 8km-long section of the trail between the Nevesjoch Hut and the Edelraut Hut is called the ""Neveser Höhenweg“.
The ""Pfunderer Höhenweg“ trail (follows after the Edelraut Hut) is a high altitude trail through wonderful countryside, which stretches from Sterzing right through the southern foothills of the Zillertal Alps to Bruneck.

Instead of descending to Dun and staying the night there, I stayed at the Walter-Brenninger-Biwak, which I enjoyed a lot! From the Edelrauthütte don’t descend to the lake but take the Pfrunderer Höhenweg towards the Gamsscharte. Path is poorly marked in many parts and leads above large boulders, which is not easy. The Gamsscharte has to be climbed with a cable and steps, which can be difficult with a heavy backpack. After the Gamsscharte you almost pass the Biwak, which is around 200m below the actual path. Check komoot or another app for the correct navigation. The Biwak provides a gas stove, kitchen equipment, mattresses, sheats and a water source nearby. Food is not provided! Staying there was a unique experience on my via Alpina tour

[2] Continuing from Edelraut hut (which looked very modern): At the end of the lake about 15min down from Edelraut hut towards Dun, a signpost states trail 18 to Dun; it leads over massive boulders and then across a low and flat ridge, before descending to an Alm and continuing from there on a macadam road the c.5km to Dun. Good trail, medium scenic. Guidebook, GPS, and Maps.me ignore this trail and go for the guidebook's shorter way (and perhaps better-quality trail/road) to Dun.
Possibly camping close to Dun on the approach to Dun, though probably only with difficulty.
At the beginning of R35, where one leaves the main road to go straight up, are posted several hotel advertisements, including one that offers pickup if called.

[1] Two options from Chemnitzer hut to Edelraut Hut: (1) Descend to lake, then ascend to Edelraut Hut, 7km, 700m elevation gain, almost wheelchair accessible trail quality. (2) Neves highline trail (trail 1): 10-12km, 400-700m elevation gain, good, maintained trail over rough territory (rocks). One bridge over creek, one 5m long one-foot wide ledge with cable that in late afternoon resembles a waterfall (no problem, but one will get wet feet), signposted as 4 hours (which are much needed), very scenic. The guidebook in its elevation diagram shows option 1; the GPS coordinates are for option 1. The guidebook in its description covers option 2, giving 8km, 161m elevation gain for option 2 plus the remainder of R34, and states 2 hours.

July 9, 2017 Step without difficulty by taking the variant The site announces possible accommodation at the farm Duner Heuschupfe, but it is rather a vacation rental. I was personally lucky, it was free and the hosts kindly made me food for the evening and the breakfast. So inquire or get down to Pfunders, but 4 to 5 km of road that will have to go up the next day.
The GPS track goes down to the big lake, it's not matching the text. In any case, the Neves Höheweg is gorgeous and easy hiking. From Edelrauthütte it is possible to follow the Pfunderer Höhenweg (also mentioned in the text, but the GPS track goes on the road to Dun). This Höhenweg is beautiful, but demanding, especially the climb to Gaisscharte is tricky with a heavy backpack. Nevertheless I surely recommend it, it's a "short cut" that avoids going down to Dun and it's super beautiful :-). This route brings you just above Engelberg Alm and from there you can continue to the Gliederscharte.

Beautiful balcony path at the foot of the glacier. Passage near a beautiful lake. Always cans these days .... very rude !!! Best to book the cab. Edelraut (works for this year) Do not go through Dun = no housing options. Pfunders descent on a mountain pasture with a stop for a strudel. It will take almost five hours instead of 2.30 indicated ..... ..... distrust among private accomodation, Leitegger. (unfortunately full that day) Kienerfoff a little lower in the valley.

Trieste-Monaco on 27/7/14 Good reception at G.Porro refuge, great food. Slightly above 40 euros for half board despite the "CIF price". Used the alternative, shorter. Route of the end "red" of that party. A Dun fork in the Alta Pusteria to join the "yellow" drawn in 5 days.
There are no places in Dun that offer one-night stay. Either go down to Pfunders, or ask the warden of the Chemnitzer -Ronald- for advice. He will direct you to a mountain farm directly on the route. (They do not want to be mentioned on internet). They will only accomodate single hikers that come in late, and will provide food and blankets. Conditions are very primitive there. They put me in the haystack!

Damit umgeht man Dun/Pfunders.

One must expect from the Chemnitz hut 4h (not 2h) Neveser on the trail. A possible variant exciting for experienced hikers is then a glacier traverse on Hochfeiler hut on the lower Weißzintscharte (black path). This eliminates Dun / Fundres. Previously necessarily inquire at the lodge hosts to the accessibility (without crampons)
Not sure about the timings quoted, are these based on the high level route or the low level route. The Kompass Map only shows the high level route but the local information boards for the Via Alpina show the low level. I don't think its possible to walk from Dun to Chemnitzer Hutte in 5 hours.

l'Edelrauthutte

An alternative to steps 34 and 35 avoids the problem of accommodation in Dun. On Edelrauthutte follow the trail to the pass Unterweisszinscharte 1 (2920). From here cross the glacier (cairns) etb reach Hochfeilerhutte (2710). The next day, the trail joins the Via Alpina one at the bottom of the valley. Learn to Edelrauthutte

Very nice travel itinerary with a map is essential because the markup is not absolutely selective ... multiple markings in every sense!
In the descent, shortly after the pasture Eisbruggalm, the valley narrows abruptly and marking guides left to a ridge ... Do not take this path!
We must be careful to stay on the right bank of the river and down directly DUN. In 2011, a forest road was under construction in this high valley Eisbruggtal.
That day in the rain and fog I got lost on the ridges before descending into a valley very steep above Pfunders village located much lower in the valley!
There was more accommodation available DUN and I finally found a B and B in individuals Pfunders:
HAUS LEITEGGER
Bernhard Leitner
00 39 (0) 472 549 103
There are two rooms with showers and toilets. No meals, but a generous breakfast. Rates 2011: 23 € uro
Some tags and / or additional traces of paint and especially the right place ... could make the step very pleasant because the upper valley is beautiful!
