This stage is mainly downhill, leading to the bottom of the Val di Susa valley. The trail is difficult at times, going past the "Pertuso", a tunnel dug into the rock by Colombano Romean to improve the water supply. The entire stage affords stunning views.
Easier alternative route
From Vaccarone there is a direct path down to the Clopaca pass, part of the Val di Susa Alta Via trail.
Leaving the Vaccarone hut the trail heads north east towards Ricovero del Gias. The trail becomes steep and faint, first through pastures, then through woods. A trail midway up a mountainside leads to Alpe Thuille and climbs gently on to the Quattro Denti peak. It skirts around the peak and then continues across the slope, looking down over the Susa valley, to Pertuso di Colombano Romean. Then along the ridge towards the Cima del Vallone peak, avoiding the numerous avalanche nets. After the peak the trail becomes exposed and caution is required. It continues along the ridge (avoiding some rocky areas) to the Clopaca pass. It then winds quickly down the slope, through woods, to the road at the bottom of the Galambra valley, near which is the Levi Molinari hut. (Regione Piemonte)
Natural and cultural heritage
Colombano Romean, an iconic figure in the upper Susa valley, a miner and digger, dug a 500m long tunnel in the rock, entirely unassisted, at 2000m of altitude, in 1526, in order to channel water from one valley to those on the other side of the mountain, Chiomonte and Cels. The tunnel can still be seen today. (Regione Piemonte)

Juillet 2010 D36/D35
