This is a long stage, climbing Orco Valley to Ceresole Reale and its large artificial lake. It skirts around the southern end of the Gran Paradiso national park via a long series of roads, trails and dirt tracks, more or less at constant altitude, along the slopes of the valley. Half way along is the village of Noasca.
Detailed route description
From San Lorenzo, upon leaving the village, cross the stream by the road to Bughi di Sopra. Beyond the village, the bridleway, and then the trail, climb gently across the middle of the slope. Pass some pastures until Alpe Ambrella, where the left-hand fork leads down towards the Orco stream. A short stretch of road leads to the bridge at the hamlet of Pru. Past the houses a trail climbs to the hamlet of Cateri, beyond which it runs closer to the stream until it reaches Bomo, a tiny village on the banks of the stream. The trail sticks close to the water all the way to Noasca. A short stretch of road leads across the Orco again and winds along the valley floor. A little beyond another bridge, a GTA trail forks to the left, climbing the slope abruptly. After the village of Fragno a long stretch of trail cuts across the slope passing some pastures to reach Borgo Vecchio, from where it climbs diagonally across a different slope to Alpe Prà del Cres at 2005m. At this stage all that remains is the final descent, along an easy trail, to Ceresole Reale.
