From Lavamünd, the trail mostly passes through woodland. The trees do thin out in places however, and you can enjoy the lovely view into the Drautal valley. At the "Weintrattl", you will cross the highest point of the Mariazell trail (06). The crossing of the Höllgraben rift marks the border between Carinthia and Styria. One last climb leads to the peaceful little village of Soboth.
Follow the main road through Lavamünd until reaching the Gasthof Hüttenwirt inn on the left-hand side. Just opposite, the road branches off to Soboth. On the hill, Via Alpina leaves the road to the right at the first right turn after the Geradendie main road. It then continues for approx. 20min on an almost level track between meadows to the Multerer farmstead, through which you must walk. Immediately afterwards, an overgrown track through the Multerergraben rift starts, leading on a steadily rising course through the woods to a weekend house in a clearing. From here, the trail continues on a woodland path that in parts is rather steep until arriving at the "Hornigkreuz" cross. At the Hornigkreuz, the path joins the KWG (Carinthian border hiking trail) again and the 06 hiking trail (Mariazell hiking trail). From the Hornigkreuz, the route goes up through the woods on a gravel road, where you must keep to the right, past the Jamnig farmstead and further uphill, later sloping gently to the Multererbach stream. Immediately after crossing the Multererbach, the path turns to the left and leads up to the road, which must be followed until reaching St. Lorenzen. The route continues uphill past the Roth, Rechberger and Jankit farmsteads and after the last farm onto a track through a gorge to the so-called Jankitz-Trögli (a generous spring) and finally to the “Weintrattl”, which at 1,430m is the highest point in the Carinthian Mariazell hiking trail (approx. 3h 30min). Here, the 03 trail branches off southwards. However, the 03A alternative leads further on the 06 in the direction of Soboth. After approx. 10min from the Weintrattl, turn off from the dirt track into a defile, which leads down through the wood into the so-called Höllgraben rift, where the border between Carinthia and Styria is also crossed upon passing over the stream. After a short stretch along the road from Laaken, leave it behind after approx. 15min on a turn-off to the left onto a woodland path, which brings you down to the foot of the dam wall of the Koralpe power station. Pass below the dam, take the access road up to the dam, and then choose the uphill route at the first hairpin bend and the woodland path leading straight ahead. After passing the Laßnig cross, the route goes up to a height from where the locality of Soboth can already be spotted. After crossing a slope, you will finally reach the Urch-Seeweg trail before one last strenuous climb to the first houses of Soboth (2h 25min from the Weintrattel). The trail is well marked. At the foot of the dam wall, take care not to miss the track turning left uphill into the wood. (Christina Schwann, OeAV)
Natural and cultural heritage
The town name of Soboth comes from the Slovenian word "pot" and means "stream" or "river". However, this name refers to the entire area around the town of Soboth and, freely translated, means something more like "place of the deep, steep streams". And due to the geomorphological processes, the Feistritz and Krumbach streams have actually carved themselves deep into the crystalline basement. This heavy incision affects the deep, narrow-floored notched valleys. Bearing this in mind, the name of the town appears to be very apt. The area around Soboth was probably settled as early as the end of the first millennium from Ahrenberg and from Eibiswald situated further to the east. Men were sent to clear the ground in order to create settlement areas for the dominions through their strenuous labour. As with all border communities, Soboth was particularly badly hit by the World Wars. The end of World War I brought especially bitter events with it, as it was even then occupied and plundered by Yugoslavian troops. In July 1920, the people of Soboth declared their allegiance to Austria in a vote and thus lost their natural hinterland – the Drautal valley. But for the mountain farmers of Soboth, Laaken, Rothwein and St. Lorenzen, this hinterland represented their only economic connection. In October 1920, Soboth was finally made part of Austria and the SHS had to leave the occupied areas in Carinthia and Styria. The establishment of the borders brought with it a hard struggle for survival for the inhabitants, as at the time there were no transportation routes to Eibiswald. Before the end of World War II in 1944, Yugoslavian partisans occupied the police posts of Soboth. Today, 54 brichwood crosses in front of the Soboth town war memorial remind us of the victims of the first and second World Wars. The reservoir to the west of Soboth was built in the years 1988-1993. A generously extended leisure centre with a lake café is a little attraction. In the idyllic town of Soboth, the parish church of St. Jacob dating back to 1545 is of particular interest. But the pilgrimage church of St. Leonhard at the Zambichl dating back to 1645 with 14 walled Stations of the Cross and the remains of the old glass hut is also worth visiting. The town has had a little border school since 1926. (Christina Schwann, OeAV)
