Leave Binn and head into the valley until reaching the opening of the road tunnel. Here, move onto the eastern side of the Breithorn mountain and follow the mountain trail. Once above the village of Heiligkreuz, turn off into the Saflischtal valley and climb slightly uphill to the Saflisch pass. From here, follow the mule track to Rosswald, the stage destination.
Leave Binn passing the chapel of Saint Antoine and crossing the arched stone bridge. Follow the church path to Wilere, with the parish church of St. Michael, which marks the centre of this valley. Its church treasure includes a 55cm-high, gilded processional cross of brass and mountain crystals. Follow the footpath through the wood to reach another holy building, the chapel of St. Sebastian in Ze Binne. Cross the pedestrian bridge at the upper end of the reservoir to arrive on the hiking trail that leads up to the Martischmatta meadow. The trail heads down through woods and meadowland to Heiligkreuz, whose chapel is under monument protection and is decorated with baroque altars. A relic of the Cross of Christ is kept in this pilgrimage chapel. Passing crusaders evidently donated it as a gift to the chapel. A gently climbing trail takes you through the Chelliwald wood to the Sickerchäller hamlet and the Alti Mässhitta hut in the Saflischtal valley. Now the route takes a steeper uphill course. The trail leads over alpine pastures to the Tanzbede plateau, which lies directly below the Bättlihorn. Look back to see the ice-capped Ofenhorn beyond the colourful meadows, larch trees and dark green cembran pines in the uppermost part of the Binntal valley. A gentle climb leads to the Saflisch pass, where a wonderful view over the Wasenhorn and Simplon peaks and into the Rhone valley can be enjoyed. Descend from the pass to reach the Fleschbode area and head over the grassy slopes into the Saflischmatte meadow. Pass huts, chalets and the old chapel to reach Rosswald. This little holiday resort lies on a mountain ridge, from where a far-reaching view into the Rhone valley from Montana as far as the Goms upper valley can be enjoyed. (Schweizer Wanderwege)
Natural and cultural heritage
Chapel of the Holy Cross The district of Heiligkreuz lies in the Lengtal valley. The “Maiensäss” (summer huts) between the Chumme and Chrieg alpine streams consist in simple houses built between 1611 and 1786. The chapel of the Holy Cross, built in around 1678, has an unusual ground plan in the form of a cross. The high altar dating back to the year 1681 probably comes from a sculptor’s workshop in the lower Goms area, as do the two baroque side altars “Kreuzaufrichtung” (setting up of the Cross) and “Kreuzabnahme” (descent from the Cross). In the choir gallery there are eight votive pictures, which were donated as a token of gratitude for answered prayers. Below the votive gifts is a tree-like candle holder, on which hung a neck iron, but this was purloined in 1918. It is said to come from a crusader miraculously freed from Turkish captivity. The relic of the Cross of Christ received in 1741 from the Capucine hospice of Emen as a gift has doubtlessly attracted pilgrims to the chapel. It is one of the most visited places of pilgrimage in the Goms region. Over 3,000 pilgrims sign the pilgrimage book there each year. (Schweizer Wanderwege)
