Satteins
SATTEINS (495m above sea level, 2,500 inhabitants) is one of the oldest villages in the Walgau region, although its appearance would suggest that it is relatively young. This is due to the fact that the village had to be rebuilt after a major fire in 1870, in which 52 houses were destroyed. Here and there, however, there are still some original old farmhouses dating back to before the village fire. The parish church was built in 1822-24 according of the plans of Alois Negrelli, the architect of the Suez canal, in the then contemporary style (a Gothic tabernacle of 1460 is worth a visit). The Sebastian chapel on the main street is even older (building dating back to the 15th/16th century with Gothic winged altar).
