SCHNIFIS (657m above sea level, 750 inhabitants) was mentioned in the 9th century by the name of Senobio or Senuvio and already had its own church at the time. The Swiss Einsiedeln monastery has been situated here since 949, and still assumes the parish duties for Schnifis today. In 1868, a major fire destroyed 18 houses. But there are still several old houses worth seeing. The parish church dating back to the 16th century was enlarged in 1817 and renovated after a fire in 1971-73. The Schniferberg mountain, settled by the Valser people, was made accessible in 1961 by cable car.
