Sonntag
A chapel already existed in the 14th century in SONNTAG (880m above sea level, 750 inhabitants), on the site of today's parish church. The origin of the unusual Ortsnamen - named Sunnentag in 1393 - is disputed. The name could have something to do with the church patron St. Dominikus (dominica = Sunday) or witih a so-called "Sonntagsweide" (Sunday pasture), where on Sundays the cattle remained on the Stafel near the huts. Sonntag received a curatorship as early as 1406 and in 1457 became an independent parish. From 1397 to 1806, there was an independent Valser court of Sunnetag and Raggol based in the Parzelle Garsella area. The area of Fontanella on the other hand belonged to the superior court ("Obergericht") of Damüls.
