"Großer Ahornboden" countryside protection area: characterised by the contrast between the almost level pastureland and the mountain panorama of the Karwendel range. The protection area comprises 265ha. The flat terrain can be explained by the fact that a lake used to be located here. The large sycamore maples are unique (between 350 and 600 years old). This area has been used for pasture for almost 100 years: the largest alpine village in Tyrol, 500 cattle, including 220 dairy cows: milk is processed on location in the local cheese dairy into mountain cheese and butter (awarded 2 gold medals in 2001!), and sold only in local farm shops and in the refuge.
